The Standard Upper Ontology is the result of a joint effort to create a large, general-purpose, formal ontology. It is promoted by the IEEE Standard Upper Ontology working group, and its development began in May 2000. The participants were representatives of government, academia, and industry from several countries. The effort was officially approved as an IEEE standard project in December 2000.
